New Mexico District Attorney Resigns as 'Rust' Prosecutor

The district attorney of New Mexico's 1st Judicial District, Mary Carmack-Altwies, has resigned from her position as the prosecutor in the Alec Baldwin movie-set shooting case, known as 'Rust'.

Carmack-Altwies cited personal reasons for her resignation, which was announced on Tuesday. She had been leading the investigation into the fatal shooting incident that occurred on the set of the movie 'Rust' in October 2021.

In a statement, Carmack-Altwies said, "I am resigning from the case for personal reasons. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the district attorney for the 1st Judicial District, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the dedicated team of professionals in the district attorney's office."

Carmack-Altwies' resignation comes just a few weeks after she announced that charges would be filed against the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, and that Baldwin was not being charged with any crime in relation to the shooting. It is unclear how Carmack-Altwies' resignation will impact the ongoing investigation and prosecution.

The 'Rust' shooting incident claimed the life of the film's cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and injured its director, Joel Souza. The incident has sparked a national conversation about safety on film sets and has brought attention to the role of armorer, who is responsible for ensuring the safety of weapons used in movie productions.

Carmack-Altwies had been in office since 2013 and had announced her intention to run for re-election in 2022. It is unclear if her resignation from the 'Rust' case will impact her political future.
